Spanish astronomer and historian. His ancestors were French Jewish exiles who went to Castile in 1306. He studied and taught in Salamanica. His Ha-Hibbur ha-Gadol, a Hebrew work on astronomy, was translated into Spanish and Latin. He was the first to make a metal astrolabe, and he also drew up astronomical tables, which were used by Christopher Columbus. When Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, he became astronomer and astrologer at the court of John II of Portugal; he was consulted by Vasco da Gama before his journey to India. Eventually he settled in Tunis, where he completed his Sepher Yuhasin on the history of rabbinic scholarship.
